‘Vote with your Butt’ initiative launched in Mayo town

Claremorris Tidy Towns have unveiled their new and novel initiative, which they say is designed to help change behaviour and raise awareness around the impact of cigarette litter on the environment.

This project, invites residents and visitors to "Vote with Your Butt" at strategically placed Ballot Bins around Claremorris.

With the support of Mayo County Council’s Environmental Office, three eye-catching Ballot Bins have been installed at key locations.

They are under the outdoor space at the back of The Square and at both Bus Stops on Dalton Street.

These bins present smokers with thought-provoking 'either/or' question, and individuals can cast their votes by responsibly disposing of their cigarette butts in the corresponding slot.

Cigarette butts are the most common form of marine litter.

In fact, over 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are discarded every year, and many of them end up in our oceans, releasing toxic chemicals and harm marine animals.

The introduction of Ballot Bins has proven successful in cities and towns across Europe, resulting in an impressive 46% reduction in cigarette litter.

Pauline Flynn, Claremorris Tidy Towns, said: "We believe that everyone can make a difference by taking simple actions to reduce cigarette butt litter and this project is a fun and engaging way to help change behaviour as well as raising awareness."

Commenting on the initiative, Sharon Cameron, Mayo’s Environmental Awareness Officer, emphasised that this initiative by Claremorris Tidy Towns "Vote with Your Butt", aligns with Mayo County Council's commitment to promoting environmental awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility among the community.

The campaign seeks to make a tangible impact on reducing cigarette litter and creating cleaner, healthier public spaces.
