Concert in memory of Mayo artiste helps fund island church repairs

The Achill Island Hotel (Óstán Oileán Acla) was the venue for an Irish Night Concert as James Kilbane and friends took to the stage for the fundraising event in support of repairs to Inishbiggle Church.

The concert, instigated by the late Christy Henry, also known as "Mr. Inishbiggle," shortly before his untimely death last year, was a heartfelt celebration of music and community that drew a sell-out crowd.

The event was graced by distinguished guests, including the Right Reverend Michael Burrows, Church of Ireland Bishop of Tuam, Limerick, and Killaloe, Reverend Suzanne Cousins of Westport, Castlebar, Turlough, and Achill parishes, and Fr. Chris Ginnelly, Parish Priest of Ballycroy.

The line-up of performers featured an impressive roster of local talent:

- James Kilbane

- Grainne Madden

- Pat Molloy

- Michael Mac

- Tom McGinty

- Rory McGinty

- Cian McNamara

- John Flatley

The audience was treated to a night of unforgettable performances.

Each performer brought their unique touch to the stage, creating a captivating atmosphere that united the audience in song and celebration.

The concert held special significance as it honoured the legacy of Christy Henry, who had envisioned the event to support Inishbiggle Church.

Known affectionately as Mr. Inishbiggle, his spirit was palpable throughout the evening, with performers and attendees alike sharing fond memories of his dedication to the island and its people.

Inishbiggle Church, built at the end of the 19th century, is one of only three churches on offshore islands in the west of Ireland.

In 2003, it set an ecumenical landmark when it was rededicated to serve both the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic communities.

The proceeds from the concert will go directly to the repairs of this important community landmark, ensuring it remains a place of solace and gathering for years to come.
