Traffic 'utter chaos' in south Mayo town

TRAFFIC in Ballinrobe is coming to a complete standstill.

The situation has 'gone bananas' since work started on installing traffic lights two months ago, said Councillor Michael Burke.

The job was supposed to take six weeks and he queried the delay at a municipal district meeting.

Motorists are experiencing delays of up to 28 minutes to get through town. At times when schools are closing, for example, it's 'utter chaos'.

He told management if a company says it can do works in six weeks they should be done in that timeframe.

Councillor Burke also raised an issue about a number of major potholes out the Castlebar Road, which have been reported on several occasions.

His colleague Councillor Damien Ryan agreed the lights need to be expedited.

He also asked for a presentation on the progress being made on the N84 bypass, which would improve the traffic situation in the town.

A date for the commissioning of the lights was requested by Councillor Patsy O'Brien.

Management is to seek an update on their completion.
