Local election candidate calls for reduction in commercial rates for Mayo SMEs

Tommy Horan, an Aontú candidate running for the Swinford Electoral Area in the upcoming local elections, is advocating for a significant reduction in commercial rates to alleviate the burden on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in east Mayo.

Horan is campaigning on the urgent need to support local businesses, which he asserts are the backbone of the economy in the region.

Despite their significant contributions to job creation and community services, he argues that SMEs are disproportionately burdened by high commercial rates, hindering their ability to thrive.

Speaking from experience on the campaign trail, Horan highlighted the stories of local business owners struggling to keep their doors open due to the financial strain of commercial rates. He criticised previous council decisions to increase rates while simultaneously granting wage increases to councillors, suggesting a lack of prioritisation of SMEs' needs.

Horan's platform includes a pledge to work towards reducing commercial rates and offering more incentives to local businesses if elected to the Mayo County Council. He believes such measures are essential for fostering a thriving local economy and preventing the exodus of skilled workers from the region.

With the local elections approaching, Horan's campaign resonates with many voters who share his concerns about the challenges facing SMEs. His call for action on reducing commercial rates is poised to be a central issue in the Swinford Electoral Area race.
