West Mayo supermarket extension plan approved

PLANS by SuperValu in Westport to extend into the adjacent JJ Glynn grocer and ironmonger's property have been approved.

Glynn's is a protected structure.

The development will include the creation of new toilet facilities, additional shop floor space, an extension to the first floor warehouse, as well as a new two-bedroom apartment at first floor level over JJ Glynn's.

J.J Glynn's, which is located on Shop Street, closed in early 2023 after operating for 99 years.

A conservation report submitted to Mayo County Council said the proposed works are designed to have minimal impact on the existing shopfront/house. The street facade will be cleaned up and restored to continue the maintenance of this historic and artistic shopfront.

The legacy of the property will continue as a shop in the historic core of the town and the architectural and artistic characteristics will be protected for the foreseeable future
