Big investment in tackling medical needs of Mayo's growing population
A significant step is being taken to address the growing medical needs of central Mayo's increasing population.
The contract has been awarded for a multi-million-euro extension to the primary health care complex at Moneen in Castlebar.
Leading Mayo building firm, TH Contractors Limited, is set to commence works on the construction of a new wing consisting of 4,000 square metres at the centre, which will double its floor space in the near future.
The new facility will become a chronic disease hub of excellence with a specialist team in the medical fields of cardiology, respiratory and endocrinology.
The investment is part of the HSE’s integrated care programme for older people.
As well as working in close partnership with Mayo University Hospital, it will play a key role in reducing pressures on patients and staff at the hospital.
A further development at the site will see the provision of a new building for the delivery of ancillary health care which will result in further hospital-based services transferring there.
Construction is also due to start shortly on a new Tusla headquarters, granted planning permission earlier this year.
Welcoming confirmation of the investments, local Fine Gael Councillor Cyril Burke said with the growing population needs, these works are timely.
He said: “This ground-breaking health care complex will, when fully completed, greatly enhance the quality of services for people in Castlebar and surrounding areas in the county.
“The contribution to the local economy includes creating jobs for health care professionals and attracting health care related business such as pharmacies, laboratories, and stimulating growth in the town.
“It greatly complements Mayo County Council's partnership which envisages other health care related businesses moving into this medical park, thus creating further opportunities for employment."
