Passing of much-loved Mayo teacher Michael Kennelly

The death of Michael Kennelly, Cloonsunna, Castlebar, has evoked a great sense of loss in the community.

A retired member of the teaching staff of St. Gerald’s College, Castlebar, he died peacefully in the loving care of the staff in the Ross Suite, Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar, surrounded by his loving family.

An outstanding teacher of English, Michael was very dedicated to his students and instilled in them a great love of literature, prose and poetry.

Michael was also the college's soccer coach for many years and encouraged young players to fulfill their potential.

Castlebar Celtic FC has paid tribute to Michael who gave long hours to coaching players at the club.

His son, Ronan, is currently coaching the club's Under-13 A squad.

Michael will be remembered fondly as a true gentleman who was always prepared to give unselfishly of his time to others.

He is deeply regretted by his heartbroken wife Mary, son Ronan, daughters Orla and Keira, brothers Sean, Richie and Brendan, sister Lucy, daughter-in-law Joanna, sons-in-law Patrick and Ben, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren Aoibhinn, Shea, Ulysse, Margot and Lily, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Daniel, twin brother Donal and his brother Seamus.

Michael will repose at his home in Cloonsunna, Castlebar, tomorrow (Tuesday) from 5 p.m. with removal at 7 p.m. to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

Requiem Mass takes place on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m and Michael will be laid to rest afterwards in Ballyheane Cemetery.
