Efforts to preserve Mayo inland lighthouse

A SOUTH Mayo councillor is working to see that an inland lighthouse is preserved.

Councillor Michael Burke has requested that Mayo County Council's heritage officer make contact with the US based owner of Ballycurrin Lighthouse to clarify if they are interested in working with the council on having necessary structural works carried out on the building.

On his social media, Councillor Burke set out: “The lighthouse is in a very poor state of repair and without works being carried out there is a risk that the lighthouse could be lost.

“Architecturally it would be a terrible shame if this building were allowed to deteriorate further.

“It is believed to be the only inland lighthouse in all of Europe and I know the residents of the surrounding area are very fond of the lighthouse.”

Ballycurrin Lighthouse is situated on Lough Corrib, in Mayo, on the Mayo/Galway border.
