Famed Mayo pub listed for sale after years of speculation

The iconic Cannon's Bar, located in the heart of Castlebar at Market Square, has officially been put on the market by Moran Auctioneers.

This development comes after decades of speculation and recent activity around the property, which closed its doors in 1989.

Cannon's Bar, also affectionately known as "The Academy," presents a unique investment opportunity for those interested in restoring a piece of Castlebar’s history. The property is sold as it stands, without a current license, and requires modernization throughout. The pub's central location in Castlebar's Market Square only enhances its appeal, making it a coveted spot for local investors.

The property includes:

Main Bar: A cosy space with an open fireplace, capturing the historic charm of the property.

Hallway: Connects the bar to other areas within the building.

Kitchenette: Equipped with a wood floor, Belfast sink, open fireplace, and built-in corner units, offering direct access to the courtyard.

First Floor: Includes a landing, three bedrooms, a living room with wood-panelled walls and an open fireplace, and a bathroom.

Additionally, the adjacent building offers two rooms, one with an open fireplace, and a yard.

Cannon's Bar was a cherished gathering place, known for its welcoming atmosphere and intellectual debates. Locals fondly remember the establishment as a meeting place for "saints, scholars, political commentators, weather forecasters, poets, philosophers, and football fanatics." The pub earned its nickname "The Academy" due to Eddie Cannon’s vast intellect and impressive library, making it a hub for lively discussions.

Despite its closure in 1989, Cannon's Bar has remained a beloved memory for many in the community. The pub's contents, rich with memorabilia, vintage advertising, and photographs, were put up for auction back in February.
