Woman dies in Mayo traffic accident

A woman in her sixties has died following a road traffic accident this afternoon (Thursday) in west Mayo, it has been confirmed.

The victim was a passenger in a car which collided with another vehicle on the N59 road between Newport and Mulranny at around 4.30 p.m.

The two other occupants of the same vehicle, a male and female, are currently receiving medical treatment for serious injuries at Mayo University Hospital.

Four occupants of the second vehicle were also taken to Mayo University Hospital with injuries that are understood to be non-life threatening.

Gardaí are at the scene and the route is currently closed to traffic pending an investigation by forensic collision officers.

The remains of the victim have been taken to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem will be conducted.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
