Additional sergeant and review of opening hours at south Mayo garda station

BALLINROBE Garda Station is to be assigned an additional sergeant, with opening hours at the station also to be reviewed.

The commitment announced by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in response to growing concerns about crime rates in Ballinrobe has been welcomed by Senator Lisa Chambers, Fianna Fáil general election candidate in Mayo.

The commitments came following a constructive meeting yesterday with Mayo councillors, including local FF Councillor Damien Ryan, to address the urgent need for enhanced garda presence.

The response follows a community survey conducted by Ballinrobe Neighbourhood Watch in recent months, where residents expressed a strong desire for increased garda presence as a priority to improve safety and security in Ballinrobe.

In light of these concerns, Commissioner Harris has announced several key initiatives, Senator Chambers explained.

An additional sergeant will be assigned to Ballinrobe.

To improve accessibility, the Commissioner will also review the station’s opening hours, with a view to extending them.

Additionally, the Commissioner is considering new ways to use the garda station with a view to increasing garda visibility within Ballinrobe.

Said Senator Chambers: “This is a crucial step forward for Ballinrobe, and I commend Commissioner Harris for listening to our community’s concerns and responding so positively.

“I’ve been working closely with Councillor Damien Ryan on this matter. A stronger garda presence, coupled with extended station hours, is essential for ensuring safety and peace of mind for our residents. I look forward to working closely with the Commissioner and Councillor Ryan as these measures are implemented.”
