Mayo Cathaoirleach calls for 'Council of the West' to harness expertise of retiring politicians

A Fianna Fáil cathaoirleach of the Claremorris/Swinford Municipal District has proposed the formation of a "Council of the West" to capitalise on the expertise of retired political leaders, following the recent retirements of Mayo’s Michael Ring and Galway’s Éamon Ó Cuív.

Describing the two as "legends in their own right," the councillor noted their significant contributions across political divides, praising their ability to navigate the complexities of the civil service to deliver for their constituencies.

“These men’s expertise is invaluable, and it would be a huge loss to let it fade into retirement,” the councillor said.

He suggested that a retired group, representing the entire west coast, larger than just Mayo, could serve as a forum or advisory body to complement government efforts, addressing regional challenges with a unique depth of knowledge.

“The west coast has a job of work to do, and this kind of council could ensure that the expertise of leaders like Ring and Ó Cuív continues to benefit our region,” he added.
