Mayo's new skate park proving a big hit
THE new skate park has opened in Castlebar and it's proving to be a big attraction.
The facility, located beside the old cemetery, on the drive in to the car park at Lough Lannagh, is being enjoyed by skate board enthusiasts.
Municipal district cathaoirleach Councillor Donna Sheridan said she was delighted that the skate park is now open and in use straight away, describing it as 'a brilliant amenity for Castlebar'.
It's an exciting time for the Lough Lannagh area and leisure and youth facilities in the town, she commented.
“We have seen improvements at Lough Lannagh with the swimmers shelter, work on the pathways and jetty, as well as work getting underway on the old post office for a new youth centre and the announcement of a multi million euro sports campus in Knockaphunta.
"The skate park is another wonderful addition to our amenities,” she said.
Councillor Ger Deere, who has been a driving force behind the facility, said: “After many years waiting, I am delighted to welcome the opening of the new skate park at Lough Lannagh.
“It will be a welcome boost to the sports and leisure facilities in the area.
“Four years ago, I proposed a motion to identify a suitable site for a skate park, and then to seek funding. I was delighted that we received funding under the Community Recognition Fund last year.
“Well done to all that worked tirelessly and campaigned for this great facility.”
