Death of founder of Mayo Addiction and Suicide Awareness charity
The death of Joe McGuire, Rooghaun, Liscarney, Westport, is widely mourned.
Joe was the founder of Mayo Addiction and Suicide Awareness charity in Castlebar, which he established in 2012, and later in Ballina, to raise awareness and provide vital support services for those struggling with mental health challenges.
A true gentleman of the highest order, Joe dedicated himself selflessly to this cause, offering guidance, compassion, and a listening ear to anyone who sought help.
For over a decade, Joe made a profound difference in the lives of so many.
The charity shops he ran became a safe haven where people felt comfortable sharing their struggles, knowing that Joe would always take the time to listen and connect them with professional support.
He had a rare and special ability to make everyone feel valued, whether they walked through the door or reached out for help over the phone.
In November 2022, an Appreciation Night was held in his honour upon his retirement, a testament to the countless lives he touched.
Joe had been bravely battling COPD in the last couple of years, yet his kindness, unwavering commitment to helping others, and his wonderful sense of humour never wavered.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Annie, and his siblings Mary, Bernie, Patsy, Denis, and Frank.
He will be sorely missed by his beloved wife Bernie, his sisters Geraldine Farrell (Westport), Kaye Mills (Northampton), Marion Johnson (Windsor), Maureen Hopkins (Coventry), his brothers John (Maidenhead) and Pete (Northampton), his many friends, and all the people whose lives he touched in the community.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved on their loss.
Remains will be reposing at his home on Monday and Tuesday.
Funeral arrives at Cushlough Church at 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday for Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. after which committal service takes place in Shannon Crematorium at 3 p.m.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
