Fond tributes to a great Mayo teacher Joe Gilmartin

The death has taken place of Joe Gilmartin, Patrician Park, Castlebar.

He died peacefully yesterday, surrounded by his family, after a short illness.

In his 95th year, Joe was a former vice-principal of St. Gerald's College, Castlebar, where he was held in high esteem.

A number of his former students are today paying tribute to him on social media.

Fr. Charlie McDonnell stated: "You taught more than French. By your manner you taught what a gentleman is, your good example and your kindness will always be remembered.

"You wore your intelligence lightly, but passed on so much of decency, goodness and culture.

"Blessed to have you as a teacher and as a mentor to look up to."

Cyril Kavanagh wrote: "A brilliant mind and esteemed linguist, a great teacher. A gentleman and a scholar."

A member of the teaching staff, Declan Askin, wrote: "As a past pupil from 1942 to 1947 and a dedicated member of the teaching staff from 1954 to 1993, Joe devoted over four decades to shaping generations of students and helping build the legacy of our school.

"Joe was a true gentleman—kind, compassionate, and deeply respected by all who knew him.

"His sharp wit and intellect made him a captivating presence in both the classroom and the staffroom, where he enriched conversations with his wisdom and humour. He was a leader and mentor who guided both students and staff with wisdom, patience, and integrity. His steady presence and commitment to the school made him a pillar of the community.

"Joe’s connection to St. Gerald’s ran deep—from his days as a student to his years as a teacher and vice principal. His legacy will live on in the memories of those he taught, mentored, and inspired."

Predeceased by his wife Máire and son Eoin, he is deeply regretted by his family: Emer, Martin, Ivor, Máire and Brendan, grandchildren Naoise, Martina, Patrick, and Ainara, his extended family and dear friends, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
