Investment in west Mayo town's car parks
Westport car parks are to see some much-needed investment this year.
The council is close to releasing a tender for work in the James Street car park, with work to be completed by Easter pending availability of a contractor.
The budget will also allow some works in the Mill Street/High Street car park.
Speaking at a municipal meeting this week, Councillor Peter Flynn said they had requested this the previous month. And since then a car had gone into a shop in Mill Street where fortunately no one was hurt.
There has been frustration with flooding in the James Street facility, he said.
The other car park's surface was like something from a war-torn country and other issues included segregation of pedestrians and barriers between the levels.
Compared to other towns, they were 'third world' facilities.
However, this was welcome news, he said, and he hoped to get it resolved in 2025.
