Global instability proves need for urgent investment in Mayo airport
A Mayo TD has called on the Minister for Enterprise to prioritise the expansion of the strategic development (SDZ) zone at Ireland West Airport Knock, citing it’s huge untapped potential.
Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh stated: “Ireland West Airport has 95,000 square meters of commercial enterprise space that can be used for economic development.
"Recently a new manager was appointed at the airport and while I very much welcome this appointment the government needs to support the staff and management at the airport as well as Mayo County Council and other local authorities to prioritise this essential infrastructure project for the western region.
“Last year, the Northern and Western Regional Assembly published research showing that since 2016, the north and west region has received just 5.7% of investment in infrastructure projects worth more than €20 million.
"It is past time to deliver and investment in the airport zoning plan, as well as the Western Rail Corridor would be game-changers.
“In 2021, Sinn Féin wrote to the European Commission seeking a total exemption from state aid rules for regional airports such as Ireland West Airport Knock due to the challenges of Brexit and Covid-19.
“I have asked the minister to consider pursuing this objective to enable Ireland West Airport SDZ to reach its full potential.
“The global uncertainty and geopolitical turbulence must bring urgency to increasing our competitiveness potential for growth.
"Now is the time to drive this region forward and use everything we have to increase prosperity and secure our future.”
