Dillon welcomes further proposal for affordable homes in Mayo town
A new affordable housing development is in the pipeline for Castlebar, Minister of State Alan Dillon has confirmed, with a planning application lodged with Mayo County Council last week for the delivery of 30 new homes.
Commenting on the announcement, Minister Dillon said: “I am delighted to support increased housing supply in Mayo.
“This proposed development will deliver a total of 30 homes, consisting of 16 three- and four-bedroom houses along with 14 one- and two-bedroom duplex units. The location on Turlough Road, Castlebar, offers excellent access to local amenities and services.”
He continued: “Delivering affordable housing has been a key priority for me since my appointment as minister. I fully understand the challenges facing young couples, individuals and families in securing a home near their work and community.
“This issue is critical for people across Mayo.
“A local revision of housing targets is due, based on Housing Need and Demand Assessments (HNDA), and I am actively working with Mayo County Council officials to ensure we meet demand for both social and affordable housing right across the county. Increasing the supply of homes, both public and private, is essential to solving the housing crisis.”
Added Minister Dillon: “At national and local level, I am focused on removing barriers to delivery, supporting the zoning of more residential land, improving access to finance for builders, and ensuring critical infrastructure, such as water and energy, is in place to support development. Our shared goal is to stabilise house prices and make home ownership more achievable. The government is committed to playing a central role in this effort.
“I look forward to this proposal progressing in the coming months, giving more young people and families in Mayo the opportunity to get on the property ladder.”
