Fines for illegal parking in Mayo county town

A NUMBER of fines have issued to people illegally parking in Castlebar.

Parking on footpaths and in cycle lanes is a 'pet peeve' of Councillor Donna Sheridan. “It has to stop,” she told a municipal meeting.

A school child was nearly hit as they had to go out onto the road with cars parked between the cycle lane and footpath on the Newport Road, she said.

She wanted to see action by the gardaí and council to enforce it.

Municipal head David Mellett said the council has issued a few tickets. It has brought up a few interesting questions regarding where residents park, particularly if they have visitors.

This has been flagged with the active team that if putting in additional cycle lanes, they possibly had to look at additional parking areas for properties that don't have on street parking.
