N5 project on track for 2027 opening, bringing big benefits to Mayo

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has confirmed that the N5 Ballaghaderreen to Scramoge road project remains on schedule for completion in the third quarter of 2027, with €179 million already spent of the overall €462 million budget.

This major infrastructure project involves the construction of approximately 34km of new single carriageway road.

The route will extend from the western end of the existing N5 Ballaghaderreen bypass to the townland of Scramoge in Roscommon, bypassing Frenchpark, Bellanagare, Tulsk and Strokestown.

Following his engagement with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), Minister Dillon confirmed that construction, being carried out by Mayo firm Wills Bros Ltd., is progressing well and will continue over its anticipated four-year period.

“Works are currently on schedule and the road is expected to open in late 2027,” Minister Dillon said.

“The €179 million spent to date has covered planning and design, land acquisition, archaeological works, and early-stage construction activities.”

He added: “This is a landmark investment for Mayo, Roscommon, and the wider western region. The project will bring long-term economic benefits through improved road safety, reduced journey times, and enhanced regional connectivity.

“Importantly, by diverting heavy goods traffic from town centres, the scheme will improve the quality of life for communities along the corridor and support local business and tourism.”

Minister Dillon also reaffirmed his commitment to advancing further regional transport projects.

He said: “I remain focused on progressing the N17 Knock to Collooney scheme and securing increased investment in rail, including the development of the Western Rail Corridor.”
