Go-ahead for pedestrian improvement scheme at Mayo town bridge

THE Abbey Street river bridge pedestrian improvements scheme at the Friarsground, Ballyhaunis, has been approved by municipal district councillors.

The scheme will see the construction of a new 2.5m wide pedestrian bridge, providing safer pedestrian facilities. It also involves the removal of the existing river access path and construction of new approach footpath and new access path to Friarsground.

Local Councillor Alma Gallagher, who proposed the project's adoption, says construction is to start in 2026.

She thanked Ballyhaunis Tidy Towns and Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce for their work on the project, saying it was a very welcome and important scheme for the town.

This is what town renewal is all about, she commented, and they needed to see more of it from the council.
