Works for three Mayo harbours go to tender

A Mayo minister has welcomed news of progress on works to three harbours in the county.

News that the design and production of contract documents for maintenance works to Porteen Harbour, Achill Island, Rosmoney Pier, Westport, and Cloughmore Pier, Achill Island, has gone to tender has been welcomed by Minister of State Alan Dillon.

Tenders are now being invited for rehabilitation works at the three locations, he confirmed, stating: “I am very happy to see that our marine communities are being supported, and this new infrastructure will certainly assist with their work.”

Rosmoney Pier is the base for Mayo Sailing Club and provides accommodation for many sporting groups. Located on the south of Achill Island, Cloghmore Pier offers a ferry service to Clare Island which also offers excellent fishing. Porteen Harbour provides a base for many who work in the fishing industry in the west Mayo area.

“These piers and harbours are really key assets to our county in terms of tourism but also people in their day-to-day lives and it is important that progress is made on these upgrade works,” said Minister Dillon.

“I recently meet with representatives from Mayo Costal Adventures, and as Minister of State at the Department of Tourism I want to ensure we have a plan to repair, maintain and invest in our piers and harbours and work closely with Mayo County Council to ensure this happens.”
