Fresh appeal for old Mayo swimming pool to be leased or sold to local club

A renewed appeal has been issued to Mayo County Council to lease or sell the old Castlebar swimming pool at John Moore Road in the town to Castlebar Celtic FC, owners of the adjoining site.

The football club made representations to the council last year to acquire the vacant building in order to transform it into dressing rooms to cater for its growing membership of boys and girls teams.

However, the club cannot access funding to renovate the pool without having ownership or a long-term lease of the property.

Now Councillor Cyril Burke has called on the council executive to make a swift decision on the matter in order for the club to progress their proposals.

He stated: "I hope the matter can be dealt with at next Monday's statutory meeting of the council.

"The club is entitled to be given clarity on the matter and, as I see it, the property offers an ideal solution to address their need for extra space due to its proximity to Celtic Park.

"I know other councillors are also very supportive of Celtic's proposal and if the club is in a position to secure funding for the works that need to be carried out, then it makes sense for the council to finally reach an agreement with the club over ownership."
