Outcry over 'minefield' footpath outside busy Mayo hospital

An elected member iof Mayo County Council has called on the authority to take immediate action to repair the footpath linking Pontoon Road to Davitt’s Terrace in Castlebar.

Councillor Harry Barrett stated a stretch of the path outside the Sacred Heart Hospital at the location has become a serious danger to public safety due to its deteriorating condition.

“That path is like walking through a minefield — you don’t know which step will catch you out next,” said Councillor Barrett.

“There are roughly 20 trip hazards on it, and anyone using a stick, a walker, or just struggling with mobility is at real risk of falling.”

Councillor Barrett said the route is used daily by older residents, families and people accessing local services, and its condition is now beyond unacceptable.

“This isn’t a case of minor wear and tear. It’s clear neglect, and it puts people at risk. We shouldn’t wait for someone to end up with a broken hip before action is taken.”

He has made an official representation to the council, asking for the path to be inspected, be made a matter of priority and be attended to as top of the list in the footpath repair programme for 2025

“It’s simple: if we’re serious about age-friendly towns and active travel, then footpaths like this must be safe. Right now, it’s anything but,” he added.
