Appeal for witnesses after shocking case of animal abandonment in Mayo town
A female dog was reportedly thrown from a moving vehicle on the Pontoon Road, just outside Castlebar this morning.
The dog, described as a grey and white lurcher, was found extremely underweight and having recently given birth, was rescued by a concerned local who witnessed the incident unfold.
The witness, a woman passing by the area, saw the dog being discarded from the car but was unable to catch the vehicle’s registration.
The dog, believed to have had puppies within the past six to eight weeks, is now under the care of Castle Vets in Castlebar. Rebecca Kelly expressed concern over the dog’s condition, noting the obvious signs of neglect.
“She’s very underweight and it’s clear she’s recently weaned her puppies,” said Rebecca. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen something like this. It’s truly heartbreaking.”
The veterinary team is currently providing treatment and care for the dog, and are appealing to the public for any information regarding the incident or to help identify the person responsible.
If you have any information or believe you might recognise the dog, you are urged to contact Castle Vets at (094) 903 5058.
