Ballyhaunis Chamber launch petition to retain credit union operating hours
BALLYHAUNIS Chamber of Commerce has launched a petition to present to First Choice Credit Union urging them to maintain the current operating hours of their Ballyhaunis branch.
Local Councillor Alma Gallagher is supporting the Chamber, urging members of the community: “We must all sign this petition to ensure our voices are heard.”
The petition is available to be signed in Forde's Ltd. in Ballyhaunis and will be sent to the credit union ahead of their board meeting on May 27.
The petition urges the credit union to reconsider plans to reduce opening hours at the Ballyhaunis branch, saying it will significantly impact local residents and businesses who rely on access to essential banking services, particularly those who cannot visit during limited hours due to work or personal commitments.
Reduced hours may also affect vulnerable customers, such as the elderly or those with mobility issues, who depend on in-person support, they say.
The Chamber has urged the credit union to maintain its current hours or, at minimum, to consult with the community to find a solution that meets both the credit union's needs and those of customers.
Deputy Paul Lawless has also voiced his support and called on First Choice Credit Union to reconsider its decision, and for the government to step in with a plan to safeguard rural financial access.
And Senator Mark Duffy also raised the matter in the Seanad this week.
