Mayo club claims successive Connacht Cup title

A Jordan Loftus penalty strike in the first half sealed a 1-0 victory for Castlebar Celtic against rivals Mervue United in a tense Connacht Cup final.

The ‘Hoops victory clinched consecutive Connacht titles for only the third time in the clubs 101 year history, marking their 11th win of the coveted provincial honour.

Celtic proved deserving of their victory and were much the better side throughout the fraught 90 minutes of action in Headford this afternoon, under baking heat, and a raucuous travelling Celtic support, Loftus won and converted a spot kick ten minutes before half-time.

Mervue United failed to create any clearcut chances as the Celtic rearguard prevented the Galway side from getting close to causing the Super League champions any danger.

Celtic’s success rolls on as the side also eye League of Ireland opposition in the second round of the FAI Senior Men’s Cup, the draw for which will take place on June 5.
