Mayo Women's League focus turns to Under 17 Cup and Shield this week

There were wins for Castlebar Town and Manulla in the Mayo Women's Premier Division on Friday evening.

Town enjoyed a 4-1 victory at home over Swinford, and they certainly appear to have scoring options this season with four names on the scoresheet.

Alannah Keaveney gave Town the lead with quarter of an hour played and when they went three up five minutes into the second half through Shauna Bolger, life was looking difficult for Swinford.

Captain Melissa Devaney had the sole reply for a battling east Mayo side on 70 minutes, but Town cancelled that out 10 minutes later to win comfortably.

Manulla now have two wins from two outings, coming out 3-1 winners down by the Moy at Conn Rangers.

Cliodhna Flynn gave Conn an early lead but Lauren McLellan had matters back level on 32 minutes.

A goal in both halves from Ella Vahey was to ultimately decide the tie in Manulla's favour.

Kilmore continued their unbeaten run in Division 1, seeing off the challenge of nearest contenders Killala 3-0, with a trio of wins now under their belts.

Two early goals in the first six minutes was a real suckerpunch for Killala, with Louise Maloney first to hit the net, followed soon after by Kathrina Barrett. And Barrett started the second half in the same vein, with a goal on 55 minutes, and there was to be no back for Killala.

In Division 2, Ballina Town came home from Achill with full points in a 2-1 win over the Rovers.

They had the perfect start when the alert Deirbhile Kilcullen shot them into the lead after just two minutes. And Rebecca Brudenall doubled the advantage on 14.

Credit to Achill Rovers, they brought the fight to Ballina after the restart and after the side had several shots on goal, Kayla Connaghan gave them hope of getting something from the game when she scored on 55 minutes.

Despite a great effort, there wasn't to be an equaliser and Ballina sit top of the table on a full 12 points.

Glenhest Rovers and Crossmolina couldn't be separated in their Division 2 tie. Scoreless at the break, Glenhest raced out of the blocks on the restart as Milly Allen kicked them into an immediate lead with one minute on the clock.

Parity was restored by Aoibhe Loftus with 13 minutes played and that's how it finished, with the sides sharing the spoils.

Next weekend there's some cup action in the women's grade with two first round matches in both the Rumley Cup and Division 2 Cup.

Straide & Foxford host Manulla in the Rumley Cup, with Fahy Rovers visitors to Ballina in the Division 2 Cup.

HAYES MECHANICAL & ENGINEERING UNDER 17 CUP AND SHIELD

The Hayes Mechanical & Engineering Under 17 Cup and Shield semi-finals will be played on Tuesday (May 20), with the finals taking place at Umbro Park, Milebush, on Sunday next, May 25.

After last week's two quarterfinals, Manulla have progressed in the cup while Ballyvary Blue Bombers will contest the shield semi-final.

Manulla had a great tussle with Killala to keep their cup ambitions alive. Two early goals - Anna Burton for Manulla after six minutes and Caoimhe O'Donnell for Killala on 10 - set the pace.

It was similarly a case of two early goals in the second half, but both for Manulla this time round, with Grace Mulroy and Burton again on the scoresheet within five minutes of the restart.

Killala struck back through Ella McLoughlin on 56 minutes, but an equaliser was to prove elusive as their visitors to north Mayo progressed 2-3.

The match-ups for the Under 17 Girls Cup semi-finals are: Claremorris v Manulla; Westport v Kilmurry. And in the Under 17 Shield: Ballina Towns v Ballyvary Blue Bombers; Snugboro v Ballyglass.

Sunday's Shield final gets underway at Umbro Park at 11.30 a.m., followed by the Cup final at 2 p.m.
