Double business closure marks sad weekend for east Mayo town

Two long standing premises in Swinford ceased trading this weekend, dealing another blow to high street trade in east Mayo.

Forkan’s Men’s Shop, a well-known menswear store on Main Street, and Campbell’s Pub, a family-run establishment for nearly 70 years, both closed their doors at the weekend, marking the end of eras for two beloved local institutions.

Although anticipated, the closures have sparked reflection on the challenges faced by small businesses in rural towns.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Adrian Forkan acknowledged the impact of the double loss to the town, stating, “It had been flagged for some time, with retirements in the shops. People want to move on, but the modern age hasn’t made it easy for clothes shops or for pubs.

With online shopping and fewer people frequenting public houses, it’s still sad to see any business close after a long time trading,” the councillor remarked.
