Funding of €5.64m. for new investment at Ireland West Airport
Mayo Minister Dara Calleary has welcomed funding of €5.64 million for Ireland West Airport.
The funding announcement was made by his Fianna Fáil colleague in government, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien.
Stated Minister Calleary: “This is another significant investment in the future of our airport at Knock under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025.
"It will allow the management to move forward with new developments at the facility, allowing it to grow and meet the demands of an ever-increasing passenger numbers.
"Among the projects being funded at Knock include security systems upgrade, air traffic control (ATC) charts, electrical infrastructure upgrade, aerodrome fire training centre, Solar PV farm, electric hi-loader, electrical ground power unit (GPU), electric ambulift, ATC engineering vehicle replacement, aeronautical ground lighting (AGLS), Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) - Transition to Level 4.
“My party has always been committed to the airport at Knock and this level of funding is further evidence of the government’s commitment to support the airport and promote it’s expansion into the future.
"I want to acknowledge Joe Gilmore and his team and all involved in helping to sustain and grow the airport throughout the last number of years – it truly is the jewel in the crown here in Mayo and I am really delighted that this investment has been secured,” he said.
Welcoming the news, Minister of State Alan Dillon stated: "While many of these initiatives being funded incorporate environmental benefits, several are specifically focused on advancing sustainability—most notably, the development of a Solar PV farm at the airport.
"This investment underscores the government’s strong commitment to supporting our regional airports, which play a vital role in promoting tourism and sustaining local employment.
"The funding ensures that Knock Airport has the resources it needs to continue delivering essential services.
"With a busy summer season ahead, the airport is well-positioned to welcome a high volume of visitors.”
