Lifeboat crew come to aid of two fishermen off Mayo coast

ACHILL Island RNLI came to the aid of two fishermen on board a small fishing vessel yesterday morning (Thursday).

The fishermen had been fishing in an area between Curraun and Mulranny when their propeller became fouled, and they called for assistance.

Following a request by the Irish Coast Guard, the all-weather lifeboat ‘Sam and Ada Moody’ launched shortly before 11 a.m. with a crew of seven on board, and it didn’t take long to locate the fishermen and their vessel.

The situation was assessed, and a decision was made to tow the small vessel back to Curraun pier.

Speaking after the call-out - their second this week - Achill Island RNLI volunteer lifeboat operations manager Ciaran Needham said: “Sometimes, despite the best of planning and preparation, even the most experienced seafarers can find themselves needing assistance.

“In this situation the fishermen did everything right and made the correct decision in calling for help. They were both wearing their life jackets and had a means of making the call, and we commend them both for their actions.

“If you, or someone you see needs help on or near the water, don’t hesitate to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard. Our volunteer crew are always happy to help when needed.”
