Minister welcomes progress on therapeutic centre in south Mayo
Minister of State Alan Dillon has expressed his delight that work will start on the construction of Daisy Lodge in Cong this summer.
In correspondence with CEO of Cancer Fund For Children, Phil Alexander, Minister Dillon said he was delighted with the news that the charity had appointed a contractor for the €15 million project.
Minister Dillon said: “I have received confirmation from Mr. Alexander that the charity has now appointed a contractor for the construction of Daisy Lodge, Cong.
"Following a public procurement process, Connolly & Fee will begin construction on July 1 next. Last year Cancer Fund For Children completed an enabling contract in advance of the main works.”
The facility will be a 30,000 square foot, carbon-neutral therapeutic centre designed to support children with cancer and their families, offering short breaks and emotional support in a peaceful setting on the shores of Lough Corrib.
Funding of €7.5 million was awarded to the project through the Shared Island Fund while an additional €5 million was previously announced by the Minister for Health.
The remaining funds are being raised through charitable donations and fundraising efforts led by Cancer Fund for Children.
Minister Dillon said: “This is a very important and worthwhile project which will assist families from all over Ireland who receive a devastating childhood cancer diagnosis.
‘I have long-supported this worthwhile charity who have worked tirelessly to get to this stage and I want to congratulate Mr. Alexander and his team on their work so far.
"I wish them the best of luck as they proceed to the construction phase. This project reflects the very best of community, compassion, and care. I look forward to seeing construction begin this summer and to the day we welcome families through its doors.”
