Battling Mayo come up a bit short against Galway

Mayo's bid to regain the TG4 Connacht LGFA Senior Championship title came up a bit short in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar, when they lost out again to their arch rivals Galway by 0-16 to 1-4, writes Aiden Henry.

Played in blustery conditions, the reigning champions laid the foundations for their victory in the opening half when favoured by the strong wind.

However, while the scoreline might indicate differently, Mayo produced a fine performance and made their more experienced opponents work very hard for their victory. Indeed, had a shot by Kathyrn O’Sullivan in the 39th minute not come back off the crossbar and a powerful effort for goal by Clodagh Keane in the 48th minute not been brilliantly saved by Galway goalkeeper Dearbhla Gower, this decider would have been a lot closer.

However, in the end there was no denying that over the hour's play, Galway were that bit better than Mayo and deserved their victory.

Yet this young Mayo side can take a lot of positives from their performance, displaying top drawer ball control at times.

However, although they managed to create three goal chances during the course of the game, it was their inability to create sufficient chances besides that cost them in the end.
