Big decision on Mayo women's mini-marathon to be made next year

THE May Bank Holiday weekend next year will be a busy one in Ballina as both the Mayo Fleadh and West of Ireland Mini Marathon will be held there.

Declan Turnbull, head of Ballina Municipal District, informed the May monthly meeting of the authority that having been a staple in Castlebar for a number of years, the mini marathon has alternated the county town and the north Mayo capital for a few years. It's Ballina's turn again next year, he pointed out.

Councillor Michael Loftus, cathaoirleach of Ballina MD, said there was too much on in Castlebar on the day of the mini marathon this year so it was great to see it being spread out next year.

He added that the agreement to alternate the event between the towns will be re-evalued by Mayo Sports Partnership following next year's run.

“The big thing is that it's coming back – that and the Fleadh,” Councillor Loftus concluded
