Appeal for more disabled spaces at busy Mayo car park
An appeal has been issued to Mayo County Council to urgently increase the number of disabled parking spaces at the Castle Street car park in Castlebar, near Collectors Lane.
Councillor Harry Barrett explained: "I’ve been contacted by several locals who rightly pointed out that there used to be three disabled spaces in that area of the car park, but now only one remains. This is simply not good enough.
"This single remaining space is nowhere near enough to meet the needs of those trying to access essential services in the area. I've also an issue with the size of it as it just accommodates one car but yet takes up so much space.
"There’s a very busy GP surgery nearby, along with a local pharmacy, and it’s causing serious hardship for people with mobility issues.
"We’re making life harder, not easier, for people who already face enough challenges by limiting parking in this area to just one space.
"I’ll be raising this matter formally at the next Castlebar Municipal District meeting and will be asking the council to review the layout of the car park as a matter of urgency.
"We need to look at reinstating the previous number of disabled spaces and make sure they’re properly placed so that access to the medical centre and pharmacy is safe and straightforward."
