Westport and Snugboro claim Mayo Under 17 Girls Cup and Shield titles

Westport United were crowned Hayes Mechanical & Engineering Mayo Girls Under 17 Cup champions on Sunday.

In a double header for the Mayo Women's League at Umbro Park, Milebush, Snugboro United claimed the Hayes Mechanical & Engineering Mayo Girls Under 17 Shield title.

The shield final was a tightly contested affair featuring Snugboro and Ballina Town, with the Castlebar side running out 2-1 winners.

Both sides enjoyed spells of ascendancy, with Ellenrose Lavelle sending Snugboro into the lead from a free on 27 minutes.

Beth Murrihy extended their lead, but Ballina kept battling and an Ailbhe Ferguson goal on 72 minutes set up an exciting finale as they went in search of an equaliser.

It wasn't to be, however, with Snugboro holding on to win.

Westport United retained the Under 17 Cup against a spirited Manulla side later in the afternoon, winning 7-2.

Player of the match Katie Hughes had a hat-trick, and captain Aoibhinn McNamara certainly was a leader on the field with two goals of her own.

Manulla trailled 3-1 at half-time and when Sophie O'Donnell pulled it back to 3-2, momentum was with them. But while they were unlucky with a number of good chances throughout, Westport were clinical in taking their opportunities to run out worthy winners.
