Concert to raise funds for historic Mayo church restoration

Fundraising is ongoing for the restoration of Holy Trinity Church, Westport, which was significantly damaged during Storm Eowyn on January 24 last.

Damage was caused to the roof of the structure while part of the ceiling over the sanctuary, the pulpit and close to the tower door, which visitors use don a daily basis, fell down.

This necessitated the Select Vestry making a decision to close the church to the public and parish until such time as it can certify that is no longer a safety risk to anybody entering the church.

However, the burden was lifted by the gracious gesture by Fr. John Kenny, Adm., Westport, to offer the use St. Mary's Church to the Church of Ireland community for their Sunday and midweek services until Holy Trinity reopens.

Now efforts are ongoing to ensure the necessary works are carried out at Holy Trinity Church as swiftly as possible.

To this end, Vocalessence Ladies Choir and Mayo Concert Orchestra, fresh from their recent performances in Callella, Spain, will perform Kathy Fahey's work, 'Illumination' at St. Mary's Church, Westport, next Friday, May 30, at 8 p.m., with all proceeds going to the Holy Trinity Church Restoration Fund. Kathy is also the concert's musical director.

Sponsored by Portwest, the event will also feature Andrew Gavin (tenor) and Anne Marie Gibbons (mezzo-soprano).
