Five from five for red-hot Mayo Mustangs
The Mayo Mustangs recently went east along the road once again to the Dublin Masters Basketball Tournament for 2025, and came back west with the trophy in tow.
There were 15 women’s teams competing in the Over 40 category, with four groups. Mustangs were in Group A along with Mayfairs (Kilkenny), Tullanothers (Tullamore) and Vixens (Dublin).
All group teams had to play each other once and Mustangs won their group games well, beating Mayfairs 36-18, Tullanothers 24-16 and Vixens 46-30 in the three Saturday games.
The top of the group table placing qualified Mustangs for the gold semi-final on Sunday morning against Western Seahawks (Clare). It was a bit feisty at times but Mustangs weathered the battle to win on a scoreline of 39 points to 22.
The gold final was a repeat of last year’s final between Mustangs and the home side Oblates (Inchicore). Mustangs won each quarter with a magnificent display of basketball, offensively and defensively, and ran out a comfortable win of 33-15 by the final whistle.
Congrats to all the ladies on a superb team effort over the weekend, playing five games in the space of 28 hours.
The Mustangs were heading for Santander in Spain last weekend for another Masters tournament, with the possibility of the heat being turned up on and off the court as high temperatures were forecast for the Iberian Peninsula.
