Mayo college pays fond farewell to deputy principal on his retirement

Staff and students of St. Gerald’s DLS College, Castlebar, gathered to bid a fond and heartfelt farewell to deputy principal Declan Askin, as he retires after decades of dedicated service to the school community.

In a moving tribute led by principal Shaun Burke, Mr Askin was praised not just for his professional excellence, but for the steadfast care that defined his career.

Described by Mr Burke as “the embodiment of everything that is great about St. Gerald’s,” Mr. Askin’s retirement marks the end of an era at the Castlebar school.

He has long been recognised as a leader who upheld the highest standards—both in and out of the classroom.

Drawing a comparison to legendary GAA manager Brian Cody, Mr. Burke noted that Mr. Askin, too, believed in “doing things the right way—every time.”

Throughout his career, he was a man driven by values: standards, professionalism and care, principles by which he lived.

Whether overseeing academic programmes, coaching basketball, or guiding the school through the trials of the Covid pandemic, his influence was consistent and far-reaching.

“He didn’t just meet expectations—he raised them,” Mr. Burke said, recalling how Mr Askin’s trademark raised eyebrow in a meeting could silently challenge a colleague to bring their best.

Yet, it wasn’t just his high standards or sharp professionalism that made Mr. Askin stand out.

What resonated most, according to both current and former staff and students, was his deep, unwavering care for others.

He was a mentor, a steady hand, and, during turbulent times, a calming presence.

The emotional weight of the day was underscored by a touching video montage sent by former pupils, many of whom attested to Mr. Askin’s enduring influence on their lives.

They praised his integrity and commitment — testimonies to a man whose impact goes far beyond the confines of a job title.

“Declan has given his best to St. Gerald’s—and in doing so, he’s brought out the best in all of us,” Mr. Burke concluded.

As the school community celebrates Declan Askin’s retirement, it does so with deep gratitude for a legacy built on professionalism, dedication and care.

His departure leaves big shoes to fill—but also a powerful example to follow.
