Mayo school bus stop dispute is resolved after outcry

The dispute over the decision to move the school bus drop-off and pick-up points from Davitt College in Castlebar to Stephen Garvey Way has been resolved.

The Connaught Telegraph has learned that buses will continue to stop at Davitt College from September.

However, a new on-site parking arrangement needs to be made over the summer months to accommodate students of the nearby St. Joseph's Secondary School who had previously been dropped off and picked up at Davitt College.

The news has been welcomed by Councillor Donna Sheridan, cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District.

She stated: "I am glad common sense has prevailed due to the strong stand taken by parents on the matter.

"I am also looking forward to a suitable location being provided for the St. Joseph's Secondary school bus stop over the coming weeks.

"The decision taken to move the school bus stops to Stephen Garvey Way was unacceptable from a health and safety perspective and I welcome the fact it has now been scrapped."

Having spoken with Bus Éireann, Minister Alan Dillon confirmed that the current arrangement for Davitt College will remain in place from September.

The focus now shifts to identifying a suitable solution for students attending St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Castlebar.

Minister Dillon is actively working alongside the school principal and management, who are engaging with Castlebar Municipal District to determine an appropriate alternative bus stop location that ensures safety and convenience for students.

"I wish to acknowledge the invaluable work carried out by the school transport team in Ballina, who continue to support student transportation across the county.

"Their dedication is instrumental in providing reliable services, and I look forward to collaborating with them further on this important issue for the students and parents of Castlebar," said Minister Dillon.

Bus Eireann's school transport department has apologised for any inconvenience or confusion caused.
