Sale of former amenity to Mayo sports club is 'imminent'

A member of Mayo County Council has called on the authority to speed up the process of handing over ownership of the old swimming pool in the county town to Castlebar Celtic.

Councillor Blackie Gavin made the request when extending congratulations to Stevie Gavin’s side on their recent Connaught Cup win.

But he stressed the need for urgency from the council to prepare a report and hand over the swimming pool to the 101-year-old club so they can avail of grants and funding streams as soon as possible.

He asked for a date on which the transfer of the property is likely to be completed.

Head of Castlebar Municipal District David Mellett said that members of the club had a walk-through of the building along with council staff recently and the sale is soon to go through, which will help the club to access funding, as without ownership, they cannot apply for grants.

The amenity is adjacent to Celtic Park and the club plan to convert it into dressing rooms to cater for its large number of teams, male and female.
