17,000 Mayo claims for humanitarian aid following Storm Éowyn

MORE than 17,000 compensation claims from Mayo were made under the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme following Storm Éowyn.

New figures provided by the Department of Social Protection to TG4's 7LÁ show (screening tonight) reveal 93,007 applications (all stages) were registered nationally in respect of 75,733 people - totalling almost €12.8 million - for the scheme, opened after extensive damage caused by Storm Éowyn in January of this year.

County Galway had the highest amount of applications with 30,592, Mayo had the second highest with 17,303, and Roscommon had the third highest with 8,702 applications.

Currently there are 22,149 applicants whose claims have been decided and have not been awarded a payment in respect of Storm Éowyn.

The report on 7LÁ tonight - screening every Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. on TG4 and TG4.ie – shows the extent of the damage suffered. In 2024, just 581 payments (€2.48 million) issued under the scheme, with 52,630 this year to date (totalling €12.8 million).
