Barriers and dredging issues at Mayo quay

BARRIERS are needed at Newport Quay to address safety concerns.

The location is busy with tourists enjoying boat tours out on Clew Bay, Councillor Johnny O'Malley highlighted at a municipal meeting.

People park up to go on trips, but in the event of their car rolling it will end up in the sea as there is no barrier, he said.

Indeed, some people go out the road to park as they are afraid, he said.

And he admitted that he himself 'stays back'.

He was told barriers can be looked at in future funding streams.

Councillor O'Malley also enquired of council management if it is possible to dredge the channel going out of Newport.

The channel has become shallow due to issues with sewage and boats need the tide to be high to get out, he said.

Also in Newport, Councillor Brendan Mulroy highlighted how the road up to the church requires works.

It's a popular route, with many visitors going to the church to view its Harry Clarke windows, he said.

With buildings at the corner coming down as part of urban regeneration works, there will be considerable activity in that area, he was told, but it can be considered afterwards.
