Gentleman Jim honoured for long years of service to rugby in Mayo
by John Melvin
A TOWERING figure in every sense of the word, Jim Moore has his roots firmly embedded in the hallowed soil of Kerry, as he keeps reminding us here in Mayo.
But Castlebar Rugby Club were fortunate that he brought some of that rich soil to Castlebar where he transplanted the seeds of a new life.
An affable gentleman and wonderful company to be in, Jim has developed a reputation for getting things done rather than talking about what should be done.
It came as no great surprise when he was honoured last year by the IRFU in recognition of his tremendous work as a volunteer during his many years of service to Castlebar Rugby Club, where he still plays an active role in developing and caring for the club and the grounds at Cloondeash, which has become something of a second home for him.
Jim has spent a lifetime promoting grassroots rugby through playing and volunteering over decades but he also has a glittering rugby career behind him and one he can justifiably be proud of.
He played with UCC when a young man before spending time in England. While in England, he continued playing the game he loves with London Irish.
Jim joined Castlebar RFC when he returned from England in 1979. He dedicated his time to training and playing and has also coached Castlebar's underage teams.
Jim has been a member of Castlebar RFC's committee since 2010 and had the honour of serving a term as president.
While he has filled many roles on the committee, in reality Jim is a backbone of the club who steps in to take on any task no matter how menial.
Whether committee work, fixing toilets, marking the pitches, dealing with contractors or fundraising, Jim gives an immense amount of his time to all grades at the club.
Indeed, it is not unheard of for Jim to go into his own pocket to provide for the club's needs.
In 14 years of committee membership, Jim has never missed a meeting.
Jim is an example to younger members of what can be achieved by one volunteer.
Jim spreads his volunteering time across all of the club's teams, regardless of grade or gender.
His tireless work in and around the clubhouse is done for all members as he strives to ensure all members feel that they belong at Castlebar RFC.
