Mayo weather station recorded the hottest day of May

Newport weather station reported the highest temperature in the country for the month of May, with the mercury hitting 24.8°C on May 13.

Despite the sunshine, the station also logged the highest monthly rainfall total in the county, recording 88.2mm over the month, still well below the long-term average.

Newport experienced four "very wet days", these are days when rainfall exceeded 10mm which was the highest number recorded nationwide.

In contrast, a number of weather stations reported no such days at all.

Met Éireann also confirmed that eleven weather stations around the country experienced absolute drought conditions, defined as 15 or more consecutive days with less than 0.2mm of rainfall between April 26 and May 22.

These dry spells lasted between 15 and 25 days.
