Calls to address safety at 'treacherous' N17 junction in east Mayo

COUNCILLORS want to see safety at the N17 junction for Kiltimagh, outside Kilkelly, addressed.

Described as 'treacherous', it cannot wait for the Collooney-Knock road project to be progressed.

Local Councillor John Caulfield raised his concerns at a municipal meeting, asking council management when is it proposed to address safety on the N17 from Shanvaghera, heading north, now that a number of junctions in the Claremorris area have been dealt with.

The increase in traffic is 'phenomenal', said Councillor Caulfield, and the risks at junctions is increasing all the time.

The Kiltimagh junction is an accident waiting to happen.

On cutting trees at junctions, road safety is the priority, he added. The birds will move on to other trees.

He was supported by Councillor Adrian Forkan who said the Kiltimagh turn-off on the N17 is 'treacherous'.

Something is needed, he said, be it a stacking lane or moving the junction itself.

Councillor Deirdre Lawless also voiced her support, saying the overall road upgrade project was years from starting and this accident hot spot needs to be addressed now.
