Breakdown safety issue on Mayo dual carriageway

A SAFETY issue on the N5 dual carriageway between Westport and Castlebar has been raised - the lack of space to pull into if a breakdown occurs.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley said there is the 'odd place' where you can pull over off the main road, but on a lot of the route it's not possible.

And he cited a case of a van pulled up with a tyre blow-out, where the driver had to pull up on the lane fixing their wheel.

Luckily for them it was an inside tyre because if it was on the outside they could have been hit by passing traffic, he said.

It is dangerous for someone changing a wheel, he told a municipal meeting, and he asked council management is it possible to have more pull in places along the route.
