Urgent call for bollards to protect pedestrians at Mayo junction

An elected member of Mayo County Council has called for bollards to be installed at a busy junction in Castlebar to provide protection to pedestrians at the location.

The area in question is from the Pound Road on to the Newport Road.

Councillor Ger Deere said it is used by hundreds of pedestrians on a daily basic due to the large number of housing estates in the vicinity.

It is also used by students attending St. Gerald's College as well walkers making their way to Lough Lannagh.

Councillor Deere stated: "Until such time as a permanent footpath and a new layout are put in place at this junction, there is a urgent need to install bollards for safety of pedestrians.

"I have also highlighted on several occasions the need for a pedestrian crossing to be installed not far from this junction on the Newport Rd to allow for safe access to Castle Lane, which lead directly to Lough Lannagh."
