Former Mayo star shares career reflections on ‘GAA minor moments’ podcast
Former Mayo star Conor Mortimer takes a trip down memory lane in the latest episode of Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, recounting his rise from Minor football to the heights of the inter-county game.
The Shrule/Glencorrib clubman joins host Fergal O’Keeffe for Episode Seven of Season Four, offering a wide-ranging and honest insight into the journey that shaped him both on and off the field.
Coming from a proud GAA household, Mortimer recalls the pride of pulling on the Mayo jersey for the first time, describing it as a standout moment of his youth — made even more special when he saw his name in the Mayo News. He speaks about his development through the underage ranks, with two years at Minor and four at U21, crediting a positive environment as key to nurturing young talent.
The All-Star forward also opened up about an early-career ACL injury and his decision to avoid surgery.
He praised the psychological supports within Mayo GAA while reiterating his belief that “the best 15 on the field on the day” are what count most.
Looking back fondly, Mortimer shared memories of winning the Sigerson Cup with DCU and his iconic “Michael Jackson” celebration with Mayo.
Looking ahead, he said a senior All-Ireland win for Mayo would "explode belief" in young players across the county.
To current minors, his message is clear: “Dedicate as much of your life as you can to make it at the top level. Setbacks are part of it, don’t let them shake your belief.”
The ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast, proudly sponsored by Electric Ireland, airs every Tuesday during the Minor Championships, spotlighting Irish sporting figures and the key moments that shaped their journeys.
