Protest call over lack of progress on Mayo sewage treatment plant
A west Mayo councillor wants members of the local authority to picket outside the headquarters of Uisce Éireann over the lack of progress on delivering a sewage treatment plant for Newport.
The long-running saga was raised again by Councillor Brendan Mulroy at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, where he said matters are getting 'farcical'.
With raw sewage continuing to flow into Clew Bay, Councillor Mulroy said there is no clarity around the project and Uisce Éireann aren't making themselves available to come to the council chamber to talk about it.
And when he asked the council to impose fines, he was told it's not in their hands.
It's 'frustrating', said Councillor Mulroy, who urged his fellow councillors and the executive to march on Uisce Éireann and hold a protest at the closest possible date.
He was supported by Councillor Johnny O'Malley who said sewage has been going into the bay since 1965.
And he claimed Uisce Éireann are 'paying no heed to this at all'.
